Orchard Road Christmas Light Up 2015

This was the 1st time I got off from Tanglin Mall to take a closer look at the Xmas decorations. I haven't done that because Tanglin Mall isn't situated on Orchard Rd. While it's it's on Tanglin Rd, it's only some 300m or so from the west end of Orchard Rd. Having said that, it's also included in the Best Dressed Building Contest for Orchard Rd.

This is the annual contest to achieve dual aims. To create an interest for the shopping malls on Orchard Rd to put on its Christmas best. The 2nd is to generate interests by letting everyone to vote for the best dress building (and winner will get some prizes).

As I wrote this, the contest result hasn't came out yet. But I have some ideas or preferences what the 2 winners are going to be (I will indicate in due course) .

  Tanglin Mall
While I don't think they will win the contest, as usual they put up the biggest display. This is perhaps because they're not located in Orchard Rd where spaces are more premium, and they also happen to locate at the corner, they've relatively more space to showcase their Xmas displays (of course, bigger doesn't always mean better).

  Forum
Since I got off before the western end  of Orchard Rd, which meant that I would see malls with Xmas' dresses that I wouldn't see previously. Forum is such an example that located at the western end of Orchard Rd.

Forum decides to do something different. Instead of your usual reindeer and sleigh, it goes for the fairy-tale setting of Cinderella with horse and carriage. If you can wait till midnight, you may get free pump soup for a few weeks (after you take the pumpkin home when the carriage returns to its original form). "Wait", a sharp-eyed kid will yell out, "this is not a horse, this is a unicorn."

By now, more and more people come to the realisation that Christmas - if not originated as a pagan tradition - it's at least filled with pagan symbolism. Unicorn is very much part of Christmas, which is quite odd if you think about it. What's unicorn has to do with Christianity? Ho ho ho? Or ho hum?

  Wheelock Place
From memory, Wheelock Place kept a low profile during Xmas with its minimalist Xmas display. It must have been because of SG50, Wheelock puts on some effort and entered the Best Dressed Building Contest.

A simple, yet charming decorations in Wheelock Place

While its decorations is still a light touch relative to others, it's more full-on compares to previous years. And the appearance of the Little Prince (Le Petit Prince) in front of Wheelock Place is a nice surprise. Oui oui. The Little Prince has been something of a Cultural (dare I say) Ambassador of France to Singapore. At least for this year when this famous French character appearing in various exhibitions and films in Alliance Francaise de Singapour. This is the place where the French would like to impart its cultures to the Singaporeans.

While I like its simple decorations, it's too simple to win the contest.

  ION Orchard
It looks as if Swaroski is responsible for dressing up ION Orchard for this Xmas. The motif seems to be diamond and glitters. This is interesting because I said something about the architecture of ION Orchard being resembled a diamond surfaces just some months ago.

This Christmas decorations will push its glitz and sparkles factor to the extreme. You need to wear shades to take photos there if you want to avoid being blinded with reflections from camera flashes. Don't say I didn't warn you.

My choice for the winner of Judges' Choice for the Best Dressed Building Contest would be ION Orchard for its originality, efforts, and wow factor.

  Paragon
Paragon won the Judges' Choice for the Best Dressed Building last year in 2014. From what I could see, they aren't pulling a rabbit out of the hat this time. If anything, they're hiding the rabbit. I haven't seen inside, but I don't think they would win just based on the outside (which probably score higher points for the judges).

  Ochard Gateway
Orchard Gateway goes for the arctic look with icicles pointing up and down like stalactites and stalagmites (although not on top of each other). A structure that resembles a wedding cake with icicles and peace doves. I like it. It's different. But it's probably won't impress the judges.

  Orchard Central
Orchard Central was the winner of the Voters' Choice last year. Maybe I'm missing something, but it seems that they're not in the Best Dressed Building Contest this year. If they do, they can easily repeat the win in the same category again. And I can see why.

While they recycle some of the display structures (and recycle isn't a bad word these days), they win over shoppers because their displays are designed with them in mind. By that, I mean many of their displays are very inviting because they're basically furniture for the people to sit in to take pictures of Xmas.

Needless to say, because of SG50, the Orchard Road organiser would fire on all cylinders this year (and it shows).
